Let’s all make a pledge that we will go out of our way this holiday season to spend our money with black owned businesses.  Most Americans are sick and tired of hearing how the black community is so down trodden.  The best way to support this segment of the American population is to support black businesses.  Giving money to an organization that focuses on African American issues is a sucker move in comparison to patronizing black businesses.

An African American business owner, or any business owner for that matter, is an active and progressive citizen.  Give your money directly to them.  Forget about Big chain businesses.  If you are white and want to support local businesses in your community that is the right move.  If you are Latino…..  If you are Asian….. If you are…..  It does not matter.  Wealth needs to be redistributed.  Large businesses and governments are not going to make that happen.

This is not an anti-government rant.  It is a somewhat anti big business rant.  This is also a pro small business rant.  In case you have not noticed retail sales are quickly and steadily migrating online.  Have you been to a store recently and had an employee tell you that the product you are looking for is not available in the store and that you should check the online site.  I have had that happen to me multiple times.

So, how do you effectively seek out the specific business you want to patronize.  Well you are going to have to do a little work all on your own. Trust no one else.  Here is a tip for you:  If you are unable to actually get in contact with the business owner or top executive put that business in your last tier of businesses that you will buy from.  Don’t get me wrong.  You can not expect every business owner to have an hour long conversation with you about every product or service that they offer.  Business owners are usually busy people.

So, Back to the earlier point about businesses migrating online.  This holiday season spend online with local businesses.  Spend online with small businesses.  Spend online to redistribute the wealth.

One site that that focuses on African American owned businesses is http://www.blackbuying.com/.  Blackbuying.com has a section where you can locate black owned business in your state.  The site also offers a variety of general merchandise to buy. Plenty of great gifts for you holiday spending.  Another great site is http://www.sustainabletable.org.  Sustainabletable.org focuses on buying food locally which helps support local in exponential ways. Newdream.org offers various local buying guides and boast: Ask your neighbors what really matters and you’ll likely hear “a safe future for my kids,” “treating people respectfully,” or “a strong community.”  (http://www.newdream.org).

Please visit these sites and find your own.  Remember, you are going to have to do a little work all on your own. Trust no one else.  Well, lets just say that you will have to choose carefully how you trust.  We can not actually life our lives trusting no one else.  We need to trust that is more important to stand by businesses that cater to fifty thousand people than it is to support businesses that cater to fifty million people.  With that in mind, directly supporting black and other local businesses is the future for all of us.

If there is anything at all Africa is in need of, it is nothing but cultural education of life. The financial demands of traditional marriages and funeral ceremonies in this part of the world have completely brought many individuals and families to down to their knees, ruination and even sent them to early graves courtesy of stroke or high blood-pressure; still we are far from learning great lessons maybe because we have become inured to learning our lessons in hard ways.

Consummations of traditional marriages and funeral ceremonies constantly occur anywhere in the world but what follows upon occurrences in Africa is a situation which if not well managed could also lead to the death of newly-weds or deceased families as the case maybe. This write-up is particularly concerned about traditional marriages in Africa especially in the Nigerian society and the greedy roles played by such families.

Many traditional weddings in Africa have after the ceremonies welcomed poverties and disheartening images in the homes of the newly-weds. This can be   particularly blamed on the family of the bride because they always want everything from grooms, a situation like this may also be blamed on the couple, who for what the people of the world may assume them, overstretch their spending by accepting loans, borrowing and even disposing-off valuable possessions just to meet up with marriage demands. It is therefore not uncommon to find couple begging for foods two weeks after holding their marriage.

The aftermaths of extravagance, unnecessary grand and colourful activities that are tied to marriages often leave couples in chains, abandonment and in sorrow. I shall try to explain how families of brides in many part of Africa sale their daughters thus making life meaningless for them.

In our African society, many cultures require that a bride-price be paid before a man can marry a woman but the idea of payment of this bride-price has been mismanaged, and grotesquely distorted to means of one-day generation of money for the family of the bride. Our families in Africa have become materialistic only wondering how much more they could making marrying –off their daughters to supposedly wealthy individuals in the society. These families want to keep eating continuously from dowries and bride-price of their daughters.

A situation whereby dowries and pride-price are negotiated should be discouraged because humans are no goods and the days of slavery are past. Interestingly, it is customary for the family of the bride and groom in some part of Africa to employ the middlemen who negotiate and bargain on the price of bride-price to be paid. The same method our fore-fathers who acted as middlemen captured and negotiated away their children who were sold to Europeans slave traders. Many a marriage has been brought to an abrupt end because the representatives of families who went on negotiation would either not agree on any particular sum or the groom could simply not afford the sum levied on his wife to be. This is disgustingly terrible.

The implication of the developments pointed out here is that many unmarried cohabit and bear children which in Nigeria we call “Lagos marriage.” Sometimes cohabiting may be considered immoral in the society but the act has with financial convenience enabled many of such victims to achieve their aims because when the groom comes knocking at the of his in-laws for marriage, he is sometimes leniency maybe accorded him because of the belief that he may after all abandon their daughter.

This greed in families has also led to the bankruptcy of newly-weds and brought about elopements too, and such daughters are never to be seen again until he returns with pregnancy which her clever man may deny. An ugly situation created by this may also be seen in the availability of adult-singles who litter around African streets, many of these singles have availed themselves of the opportunities to defraud true marriage seekers online especially Americans and Europeans thus further discrediting the image of the continent.

Although, marriage negotiation remains the affair of families involved but greed for high bride-price should be checked and discouraged by governments if this social problem is to be effectively put under check and ugly consequences often leading to large number of divorces in our court should be reduced. In this way, jostling for large share of money from bride-price among family members and elders of villages should be discouraged. We may sometimes expect reasonable family members to accept half of bride-price and return the rest of it to the groom because the money will be used to take care of their daughter, and this way their daughter will be have a happy home. We have also observed some families heads who in the course of marriage negotiations state that they would accept anything given to them.

Unfortunately, many churches in Africa today have encouraged large spending and affluence in the organization of Christian marriages between their members, and many of these churches are still in existence today. It is also stands to reason to understand that two of the Christian denominations who have stood out, not being carried away by unreasonable demands are Deeper Life Bible Church and Jehovah’s Witnesses. Anyone of you who have had the opportunities to attend weddings organized by these denominations will readily agree that much time and affluence are not exhibited in these churches.

We want to call on the Nigerian Government to curtail the greed occasioned by bride-price by enacting and enforcing a law as we have seen in a tiny West African State of Togo which states that “bride-price can be paid in kind or in cash or in both ways”     

The law adds: “In no case should the amount exceed the sum of 10,000 F CFA (US$20.00).” (Negotiating a Reasonable Bride-Price, www. Watchtower.org)

Our Government of Nigeria should also realize that it owes its subjects social responsibilities, and operating this will make our society a good for all and finally reduce corruption and desperation among the youths of the country. After all marriage can be a free gift from God, and most youths who plunder the society, engage in robberies, assassinations and other forms of nefarious activities do so to favour women.

The African Kanga is a garment usually worn around the waist. It’s has been around for many centuries and it’s highly exalted by most African communities. In Kenya it’s the choice of the Coastal region. It comes in range of different colors. It symbolizes different occasions and especially in Africa it shows how deeply rooted our culture is. It’s used during weddings, dancing competitions or for daily duties around the house.

The African Kanga is loved very much by tourists. In the coastal region it sells a lot like hot cake as tourist prefer to wrap it around their waist as they head to the beach. The most stunning thing about it is that it has very inspiring words written at the bottom. It’s either advising or cautioning about something, though this is in local dialect – Kiswahili.  Since now the world has become global its being sold all over  and people are embracing it and soon it might catch up like fever forcing everybody to have one.

The African Kanga has evolved to take up very many roles. In Nigeria it’s the choice of many women who use it as headgear. It‘s also used as a shawl for babies. It’s not a big surprise to see that the Kenya National dress has borrowed so much from it. If you have time you can tailor make one for yourself to serve as a memorabilia of Africa culture. One can also buy several of them to give out to his friends as gifts. This is very common in African communities especially women.

Nigeria has highest proportion of happy people that is followed by Venezuela, Mexico, and Puerto Rico, whereas Russia, and Romania have the smallest number of happy people.

But the factors that make certain people happy might differ from one region to next with individual success and articulacy being seen as most significant in US, whereas in Japan the prospect of family is valued very highly. It is arduous to listen that Africa is about poverty, economic, aids, unbalance, stagnation doldrums, powerful tribal wars, riots and so on.

 

It is hardly highlighted that the Africa is about endless resources, fashion designers, enchanting cultures, mysterious natural spaces, gifted writers, growing movie industry, prosperous history, sports teams, and way of life. Even though there is every day suffering, the African people want positive side to stand out and positively things are all changing. Many people and many stunning artists have put little pressure in dissimilar manners by organizations, hard work, events and concerts in order to bring the state to light. Nowadays, the Western countries leaders know that they have to take away annoy, which will stop people from walking right.Lots of changes can take place and earlier than we know.

In late 70’s Western countries offered loans to Third World countries with very huge interest rates that created heavy debt. In order to help them they paid the debt off, IMF gave other loans, which was depending on some conditions like the depression of their money, dipping the subventions that was given to the products or services of first requirement, retreating the health plan in order to grant main concern to the export. Thus fight is not exclusively about economical increase and lift of Africa but fight is about level of the circumstances on which they will allow African to rise and live a happy life.

Health Care systems and Education are very important. For instance, certain people die from the diseases that are ignored in Western countries, as they are totally healed. There is no checkup at all and medical expenses can be too much the salary of one working individual. We require schools and solid education for the future teachers, agronomists, politicians, lawyers, and ecologists. I hope corruption and hunger for money will significantly diminish on African and Western sides. An effort for Africans themselves made Africa’s independent development and is not fated! Drop the mistrust! On a personal level, I would like to put a point, which is very close to my heart that it is a place of Africans in the European history.

It will be good if some history courses in the schools can wisely talk about about the actuality of everything. It will assist understanding the “today” and will better serve tomorrow’s peace. Individuality is very significant to every person, country and continent. Minimizing the existing facts is just like ignoring millions of souls all over the place who has already suffered those unlucky events. We must have monuments as well as recognition days for all of them. Visualize each of these souls until deliverance, are craving for harmony.

How much do you appreciate your right to vote? Is it something that you truly cherish, or is it something that you just take this for granted? Consider this fact; throughout our American history, many average citizens like you and me fought for this right, and in some cases, even died for the right to vote! This is a patriotic gift from the struggles of many patriotic citizens that we should never be taken for granted.

Did you know that there are no laws for “the right to vote” in our United States Constitution? These rights were added only in the Amendments to the Constitution. Each state’s standards have evolved separately, unless federal laws were passed that applied to every state. When our country was founded, only white men with property were routinely permitted to vote, (although freed African Americans could vote in four states). White working men, almost all women, and all other people of color were denied this right, that some take for granted today.

At the beginning of the Civil War, most white men were finally allowed to vote, whether or not they owned property, due to the efforts of those who championed this cause for frontiersmen and white immigrants, (who had to wait 14 years for citizenship and their right to vote, in some cases). Literacy tests, poll taxes, and even religious tests were used in various states, and most of the white women, people of color, and Native Americans still did not have the right to vote.

Black Suffrage; The patriotic gifts of the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments to the U.S. Constitution were passed following the Civil War, in the later 1860s. Besides outlawing slavery, these Amendments extended civil rights and suffrage (voting rights) to former slaves. Even thought the right to vote for African-Americans was established, there still were numerous restrictions that kept many black Americans from voting until the 1960s Voting Rights Act was passed. Thanks to the pressures of Dr. Martin Luther King and a powerful civil rights movement, the federal Voting Rights Act of 1965 banned literacy tests and provided federal enforcement of voting registration and other rights in several Southern states and Alaska. Five years later, the patriotic gift of the Voting Rights Act of 1970 provided language assistance to minority voters who did not speak English fluently. Asian Pacific Americans and Latinos were major beneficiaries of this legislation.

Women’s Suffrage initiatives to promote voting for women have been traced back as far as the 1770s, but the modern movement for a vote for women traces its beginning to the Seneca Falls Convention in 1848, when supporters of a Constitutional Amendment to allow women to vote finally came together. While this movement was slowed during the Civil War years, the two major suffragist organizations united after the war and pushed forward with a movement that culminated, and after many difficult years, the patriotic gift of the 19th Amendment gave women the right to vote in 1920.

Native Americans had to become American citizens, and give up their tribal affiliations for the right to vote in 1887, but many did not become U. S. citizens until 1924. Most of the Western states continued to deny the right to vote through property requirements, economic pressures, hiding the polls, and condoning of physical violence against those who voted.

Asian Pacific Americans were considered “aliens ineligible for citizenship” since 1790. Interim changes to naturalization and immigration laws in 1943, 1946, and 1952 give the right to vote to some but not all immigrant Asian Pacific Americans. Because citizenship is a (precondition) for the right to vote, immigrant Asian Pacific Americans did not vote in large numbers until 1966 when the immigration and naturalization laws were changed.

Asian Pacific Americans born on American soil were American citizens, and had the right to vote. When 77,000 Americans of Japanese ancestry were put in American concentration camps during World War II, their right to vote was withheld during there captivity.

Mexican Americans in Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico, and Texas were supposed to get voting rights along with American citizenship in 1848, when the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo ended the Mexican American war. Property requirements and literacy requirements were imposed in those states to keep them from voting. The Sons of America, founded in 1921 fought for equality and the right to vote, but all Mexican Americans did not receive the right to vote until 1975.

Americans under the age of twenty-one in the late 1960s protested over their lack of suffrage. Many truly felt that if they were old enough to be drafted into service and go to Vietnam, then they should be able to vote. A series of protests ensued, most notably at the Chicago Democratic Convention, where protestors screamed and chanted many slogans of President Johnson’s handling of the Vietnam War, and the right to vote. In 1971, President Johnson signed our patriotic gift of the 26th Amendment granting Americans the right to vote at age eighteen.

I hope you now realize that even in “The land of the Free”, the evolution for the right to vote in the America has cost a heavy price for many, and should always be considered a true patriotic gift from those that struggled, endured and gave their life for this privilege that we have today.
