Africa: Bobo and Zulu tribes.?

Ok, I need to find out about the Bobo and Zulu tribal masks. Things I need to find out about include How they were made, what materials they used, how the materials were significant, when they wore them, why they wore them, colors and their meaning, etc. Also, I would like to know how to make an easy Bobo mask, preferably out of paper mache.

It Began in Africa: Tunisia and the Star Wars Pilgrims

The North African country of Tunisia really could be classed as out of this world; the dune riddled nation provided the setting for the fictional planet Tatooine, Luke Skywalker’s desert home planet, that played a major role in several of the Star Wars movies.

Tunisia’s sparsely populated land and dusty geography provided the perfect location to create Tatooine’s dune seas, expansive desert wastes and rocky outcrop, and fans of the Star Wars books and films continue to make the pilgrimage to Tunisia to visit this iconic setting. Nowadays you’re likely to find the locals a little more friendly than the fictional Jawas, the pygmy-like scavengers of technology, or the hostile Sand people (also known as Tuscan Raiders) with whom Luke has a nasty run in with during the ‘first’ film, Star Wars – A New Hope.

Luke Skywaker’s home was filmed in a subsoil abode in the real troglodyte town of Matmata. Here, residents make their homes by burrowing into the soft sandstone and visitors can still see some of the murals and set dressing of the Skywalker’s homestead from the movie at the Sidi Driss Hotel, in Matmata.

The outside of the dwelling, where Luke observes the two suns, is part a dry, white salt flat called Chott el Jerid, that stretches across central Tunisia to the oasis of Tozeur and Nefta. The Dune Sea – the vast expanse of sand in which C3PO and R2D2 wander aimlessly is known as La Grande Dune, and the gully in which they are captured by the Jawas, is east of Tozeur at the Chott el Jerid.

The spaceport town of Mos Eisley, which was described by Obi-Wan Kenobi as a “wretched hive of scum and villainy” and is a hang out for intergalactic smugglers and others from the space criminal underworld, is in actual fact Aijim – a sponge fishing town near the lle de Jerba. And if you’d want to see where Jedi knight Obi-Wan’s remote home was located, you’ll find it to the north of Aijim, overlooking the Gulf of Gabes.

Unless you can hitch a ride with Han Solo and Chewbacca on the Millennium Falcon, you’ll probably have to find an alternative form of transport. Thankfully, although Tatooine was in a galaxy far, far away, Tunisia isn’t; and Star Wars Fans will be pleased to hear that the country is surprisingly well served from the UK; there are plenty of cheap flights to Tunisia from airports around Britain.

Other destinations that are part of the Star Wars pilgrimage include: Tikal in Guatemala, which played the Massassi Outpost – the rebel base on the fourth moon of Yavin; the Palazzo Reale near Naples Italy, which played host to Theed Palace on Naboo from the Phantom Menace, and Krabi Province, Thailand which provides the setting to Kashyyyk – the Wookie homeworld.

So, grab your light sabre, don your Darth Vader mask and use the force to follow the Star Wars pilgrimage around the world.

Home to exotic vineyards, white-sandy beaches, beautiful natural reserves, stunning landscapes and scenic beachfronts, Capetown is a mesmerizing experience for any visitor. With the FIFA World Cup drawing near, the city has acquired a facelift and is now   ready to handle the huge influx of visitors expected during the tournament. Begin your sightseeing tour of Capetown by ascending the top of Table Mountain in a cable car. The magnificent views of the city you get from this point are simply amazing. Climb down the Table Mountain in a cable car and visit the beautiful Rhodes Memorial that is a part of the Table Mountain National Park and offers unique insights into South Africa’s history.

Take a trip down the memory lane by visiting Robben Island on a boat from the V&A Waterfront. This place is infamous for being the home to Nelson Mandela who spent 18 out of 27 years of imprisonment on this barren island. Continue your tour and explore the cobble-stoned Green Market Square in CapeTown that is famous for handcrafted items like African Carvings, masks, drums, beadwork etc. Red Shed Craft Workshop & Waterfront Craft Markets are places that offer reasonably priced jewellery, art and craft items. For  getting bargain deals  head to the Green Point Market on Sundays where you can steal exciting deals on everything from sun glasses to compact disks. However, if it is lifestyle related merchandise that you are looking for like home décor, art and artefacts then a trip to Cape Quarters is a must.

Head to Gugulethu where you get to sample authentic Xhosa Cuisine in the famous Radebe restaurant. Other places that you can try out are the Bing Bang Club in Loop Street, Tiger’s Place and Lalapha in Langa Township. Before you end your tour do make a trip to the captivating Cape Peninsula that boasts of some of the finest beachfronts and is just great for some undersea adventure.

Try if you can to book your cheap tickets to Cape Town during the Cape Town Carnival when the entire city is steeped in an atmosphere of festivity. Or if you are the sporty kind, you can book your tickets to coincide with the dates of FIFA World Cup when you can combine the best of sightseeing with some thrilling soccer action.

The treatment of anxiety disorders in Africa is not as advanced as it is in the advanced countries.

One reason is misconception by the general public. Mental problems are generally looked down on by the people. It is commonly believed that one has been bewitched and no cure exists for such a person. The level of stigmatization can reach aberrational levels.

Note that people who suffer from panic disorders can not be classified as “mad”. They simply conclude such a person has issues, some serious ones!

Rather than seek orthodox treatment, many simply prefer to take the sufferer to a medicine man!
This merely worsens the problem. Many are not aware of orthodox treatments and even when aware either cost or access to treatment acts as barriers. There are simply more pressing problems.

Another challenge is that many sufferers are not aware that their condition can be treated. They live in this darkness perpetually. Remember, that literacy levels are low and mental health workers few.

On the part of the mental health practitioners, treating anxiety disorders can also be a challenge.

The psychiatrist prescribes medicines such as Zoloft or generic versions to their patients which have positive benefits.

Nevertheless, the psychiatrist is usually not as acquainted with panic disorders as his western counterparts as only few Africans ever consult practitioners. This is a continent where many are poor and therefore have more pressing needs.

This ignorance can be a challenge for the psychiatrist and psychologist need to appreciate the sufferer’s condition. Due to encountering little or no patients, he may simply follow a textbook routine.

African psychologists may not also appreciate panic disorders because the sufferer may be calm in their presence. Many with panic disorders sound very intelligent in the presence of their psychologist and to one unfamiliar with the condition, find very little wrong. The reason for the calmness is because he the sufferer can talk openly about his condition. It is the stress of masking the symptoms or trying to be perfect that triggers off an attack.

The psychologist may also not be familiar with causes of anxiety disorders which is crucial to treatment. He may for instance see the need for the sufferer to be independent but may not realize the importance.

It is a pity because as Africa develops and more people move to the cities, social phobia will be on the increase.

Now more than ever, Africa needs to produce sufficient mental health practitioners to treat anxiety disorders properly.

Travel to Africa as an Esl Teacher – How to Find and Set Up Your New Home in Burkina Faso

Teaching English in Africa is a challenging but fun way to travel internationally but it does have its hurdles. One of the first challenges with working in Africa is finding housing in BURKINA FASO. It will always be different from your home country in the west. Finding a place to stay is your first challenge and hopefully your employer will have housing set up for you in BURKINA FASO. If not, then find out how the locals locate and rent affordable housing in the capitol city Ouagadougou.

Usually, the first thing they will do is direct you to the Africa English language website to look in the rental advertisements. This year there are approximately 80,000 internet users in BURKINA FASO. This is a growth in internet use of 700.0 % from the year 2000 until the present. Today, believe it or not, 0.5 % of the population is on the internet in BURKINA FASO of all places. So the chances of you finding a good real estate website are high. This is ok if you by chance are working for a large BURKINA FASO company that is paying you a nice salary paid in Euros or Dollars. This does happen of course but it is rare.

This will give you an idea about rent but also ask about utilities, but especially about wireless access. The percentage of the population of BURKINA FASO that uses the internet is 0.5 % so if you look at apartments with your laptop on you will find out which apartment has the free wireless access.

Usually, one of the BURKINA FASO English teaching staff can help you look in the BURKINA FASO paper for a place. Learning English online is very common around the world and your colleges at work will be able to translate for you. Some teachers continue to learn English by even taking downloadable lessons that include ESL word games with native speakers for teachers.

How are things heated or cooled in BURKINA FASO? How much does the teacher pay? What does it cost to get the utilities turned on? How much is internet access? Are there electricity outages? What about the water situation? Does it ever get cut off, if so, for how long? Some countries use propane cylinders instead of a line directly into the house. How much do the cylinders cost to buy and refill. Do they deliver them or do you have to carry it? They are heavy when full.

If you are short on money and or want to learn the ropes from a local then ask about being a roommate/flat mate with a local teacher. Be for warned that this can be challenging for the most experienced of expats. If you have the money then renting your own place does give you privacy and sanctuary from the stresses of being a foreigner. Deposits are normal expenses that you need to be prepared to pay upfront. In some countries the entire year’s rent is paid on signing of the contract. If this is the case and you are not able to pay that much then try and room with another ESL teacher. There are also youth hostels, small hotels or occasionally the school has a guest house that has single rooms. This is not a great situation to be in but until you get enough for your own place or a roommate then many a new teacher made due until then.

Furnishings can be as expensive as you can afford in Ouagadougou. Your local friends will expect you to buy new since you are the “rich” foreigner but don’t feel obligated. Even thought Ouagadougou has everything you do at home don’t do it. There will usually be some market that sells used household goods. Most everything you need will be found there from the stove to pots and pans. Do bring your own bedding from home. An eye mask and ear plugs are also a good investment. Traffic noise can be very loud even lasting until late in the evening. Bring a battery powered alarm clock but beyond the clock or battery powered appliances don’t bring electrical appliances with you if they are 110 volts. Keep those to a minimum until you arrive in country.

In Africa everyone else uses 220 volt electricity so your hairdryer is useless. Even if it does have a converter on it, the dryer will burn up very fast. A lap top with back up batteries is crucial to writing lesson plans and keeping your sanity. Do not show them your lap top but find good websites for them and send the students to the local internet café. The percentage of the population of BURKINA FASO that uses the internet is 0.5 % so you can be assured your students know how to access the internet. Your laptop won’t get damaged and jealousy issues with locals will be lessened if they don’t see such an expensive appliance. There are also many online resources for ESL teachers living abroad and learning English online is fun for your students. The more you can live like a local and act like a local, when appropriate of course, the better time you will have while living in your new country.

George W. Bellas MA has his Masters in TESL with 18 years experience. He has been a Fulbright Scholar to Turkey, where he did ESL video materials development and in-service teacher training. He is the creator of English4All, a free website fro learning English as a Second Language. He is also the Managing Director of Global Span TV an ESL educational services charity.

Are 1st world nations allowing the testing of man made viruses in Africa?

As suggested in the Movie “The Constant Gardener”. Or as suggested by some that AIDS was infact created and possibly mistakenly released. I find it hard to believe that it spread from Chimpanzee to man but that’s just me. I read a story on American scientists attempts to engineer a version of the bird flu that can me transmitted from human to human in order to develop a vaccine before it mutates naturally. This seems like a crazy thing to do but what do I know, they will probaby just develop a drug to mask the symptoms so people can survive with the virus for a long time. Maybe I am just cynical.
